The Remarkable Success of SAITEM

Sakarya University Advanced Technologies Application Community (SAITEM) has won the first place in Turkey and the 8^th place in Europe in Shell Eco-marathon Competition.

The 30^th Shell Eco-marathon competition organized in America, Asia and Europe each year by Shell to encourage young people for developing alternative fuels was held on May 12-19. SAITEM is the 8th-place winner of Europe in Shell Eco-marathon Competition. SAITEM participated in the competition with their car “Evrim” and achieved 145 km/kWh in the category of Urban Concept Battery Electric. SAITEM managed the best degree of Turkey.

Shell Eco-marathon Europe took place in Rotterdam, Holland and 217 teams attended the organization and struggled for covering the longest distance using 1 litre fuel. 20 teams from 17 schools in Turkey participated to the competitions. Some schools attending the organizations can be listed as Adana Kozan Technical and Industrial Vocational High School, Yıldız Technical University, Ankara University (3 teams), Bogazici University, Istanbul Aydın University, Beşiktaş Sakıp Sabancı Anatolian High School (2 teams), Celal Bayar University, İstanbul Technical University, Gediz University, Kırıkkale University, Süleyman Demirel University, Marmara University, Hacettepe University, Sakarya University, Şişli Terakki Science High School, Erciyes University and Yeditepe University.

SAITEM Chair Volkan Çetin said “Evrim is a vehicle which is charged with urban electricity. It is very light. It received the 8^th place of Europe with performance of 145 km. It means that the vehicle covered 145 km with the energy which is equivalent to 10 pieces of 100W lamps.” Çetin added “Shell Eco-marathon is one of the most innovative student competitions. In this competition, teams of students are encouraged to design, produce and test energy efficient vehicles. We also had chance to share information with different people from Europe. Through our experiences, we aim to produce the most efficient vehicle of Europe in upcoming years.”
